Well, I’ve finished the new blog style. It’s based on Mimbo. It’s a pretty old theme, but I liked the architecture of it. The layout suited my needs. However, I did have to do some modification to make everything work. I would’ve preferred a frontend for all the options instead of sniffing around all the files and functions, but the important thing is that it looks the way I want it to. The images won’t show up on the front page, but that’s okay. It’s handled in some weird way that I don’t want to mess with, so I’m not going to bother with it.
I feel the new style is much more readable and highlights more on my blog. On the front page you see three of the most active categories: Journal, Articles, and Thoughts. The original theme had a features column on the left and a single latest article for three other categories. I decided that I wanted to be able to see further back in my journal at a glance, considering that it is makes up the meat of my blog. Secondly I wanted to highlight my articles: they are something I enjoy writing and put a small amount of effort into, so it’s only natural I want them more visible. Then there are my Thoughts section, which is basically there for no real reason other than that I have nothing else to display.
There is one thing…I’ve forgotten to somehow integrate “and the kitchen sink” into my logo. I’m going to go work on that now. Then again, it’s a little long…who knows, I’ll see. If anybody has any comments on comparing the two styles, feel free to respond.
